Open Circuit Cooling Tower

Open circuit cooling tower, also known as evaporative cooling tower or wet cooling tower, is a heat exchange equipment that uses the principles of water evaporation and heat absorption to cool process circulating water.
Its core feature is that the cooling water (circulating water) is directly exposed to the air and undergoes direct contact heat and mass exchange with the air. The cooled water is collected and pumped back to the equipment that needs to be cooled (such as condensers, reactors, air compressors, etc.) to absorb heat, and then the hot water is sent back to the top of the cooling tower for cooling, and so on.

Working Principle:
The cooling process of an open cooling tower mainly involves two simultaneous physical processes:
1.Sensible Heat Transfer:
Circulating water with higher temperatures comes into direct contact with air with lower temperatures.
Due to the temperature difference, heat is conducted from water to air, resulting in a decrease in water temperature and a relatively small increase in air temperature.
This part of the cooling does not involve the phase transition of water.
2.Latent Heat Transfer / Evaporative Cooling:
This is the main cooling mechanism of an open cooling tower (usually accounting for 70-80% of the total heat dissipation).
A small portion of the circulating water (approximately 1-3% of the total flow) evaporates into water vapor on the surface of the packing or during the spraying process.
The transformation of water from liquid to gas requires the absorption of a large amount of latent heat of vaporization (approximately 540 kcal/kg water), which directly comes from the remaining circulating water.
Evaporation causes a significant decrease in the temperature of the remaining circulating water.
The air that has absorbed water vapor becomes humid, and its humidity increases.
